Brazilian GHG Protocol Program – Gold Seal 2022

The Gold Seal is the highest level of certification granted to companies that meet all transparency criteria in publishing their greenhouse gas inventories.

Created in 2008 by FGVces and WRI, in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment, the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (CEBDS), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBSCD) and 27 other founding companies, the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program is responsible for adapting the Greenhouse Gas Protocol method to the context of our country and for developing calculation tools for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

In 2022, Cogna published its first carbon inventory, referring to 2021 – in which the main emission sources were mapped, considering scopes 1 and 2, in accordance with the GHG Protocol methodology.

In 2023, the mapping was extended to scope 3 and to the retroactive construction of inventories of the three scopes for the last four years – 2019, 2020 and 2021 and 2022. The documents were audited by a Verification Body (OV), which assigned reasonable level of confidence – the highest standard of assurance – certifying that inventories are materially correct and a fair representation of the Company’s greenhouse gas data.

The survey considered emissions from 4 corporate units, 1 distribution center, 2 high schools, 8 language school units, as well as emissions from 114 higher education units, including classrooms, laboratories, teaching hospitals, veterinary clinics and school farms with agricultural and livestock activities. Agricultural inputs, animal-related emissions and mechanized operations were also included.

And recognition for this extensive and intense work has arrived: Cogna has just received the Gold Seal in the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program – the highest level of certification granted to companies that meet all transparency criteria in publishing their GHG inventories. This achievement represents the consolidation of Cogna’s commitment to sustainability and, consequently, to guaranteeing the present and future of our planet.

Remembering that these mappings are essential for companies to measure their direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions and develop strategies for their mitigation – in other words, inventories are an essential part of the journey of raising awareness and transitioning to a low-carbon economy.
